Celebrating Diversity

Within my Preschool Homeschool Curriculum, I center to Heritage Months and Seasonal Holidays.
I use:
Books
Movies/TV Shows
Arts and Crafts and Sensory Bins for the Seasons
and Events and Experiences
While I document the resources for the rest within my curriculum, I wanted to give a separate post sharing the events and experiences. We are blessed to live in Oakland, California which is a culturally rich place full of diversity.
While I am Black American and my husband is Afro-Guyanese, I will be showing the cultures different from ours first. I truly cherish being able to celebrate our Blackness, but I also love learning about different cultures and teaching our daughter about them as well.
Lunar New Year Festival
St. Patrick's Day
We watched Brave (Scottish), Luck of the Irish, & a super cute animated film called Riverdance on Netflix that shows some legend & tradition of Riverdance.
🍀 We had an Irish restaurant by us! At Sláinte Irish Pub in Oakland, we learned that Leprechauns are called Fairies or Wee People. We saw some Celtic symbols (will be researching upon middle school). And we had a full Irish breakfast with Soda Bread, fried eggs, rasher bacon, black & white pudding, tomato, bangers, potato farl & of course beans! (My daughter only ate the non-meat but she LOVED the Soda Bread. My favorites were the rasher bacon, white pudding & banger).
Indigenous Red Market
Mid-Autumn Moon Festival
Oaktoberfest
Dia de los Muertos Festival
Día de los Muertos - Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead, a joyful celebration of life for the ancestors returning. A lot of indigenous traditions which I absolutely LOVED the drumming and dancing for. (Reminded me a lot of African traditions). This was the 30th annual celebration.
Food: pan de Muertos (bread of the dead) and Horchata (sweet rice milk). I also had a veggie burrito with them carrots and peppers 🤤🤤
Diwali Celebration
Diwali - a Hindu Celebration of Lights (light over darkness). In Guyana, this is a huge event that I would like our family to attend one year. In Oakland, this was the 3rd Annual event. Hosted by Oakland City Council Member Janani Ramachandran who is pictured in the sari, alongside Oakland Mayor, Barbara Lee; who volunteered within the Black Panther Party.
Food: Channa, Samosa, Kheer, Gulab Jamun, Jalebi, and Sel Roti 😋
