Having Multiple Belief Systems

I said I believed in Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism, Taoism, Animism, and West African Ancestral Veneration.

And someone asked...

Q: "how do you believe in Buddhism and Hinduism and Taoism and animism? None of those things mix with each other?"

My response:

"Buddha was Hindu. Find the similarities between them all. As well as the idea that can someone can believe in multiple things.

 Hinduism:

  • Atman: The eternal, unchanging soul or true self present in every living being, which is distinct from the body and mind.

  • Dharma: Righteousness, ethics, duty, and cosmic order. It is the proper way to live, aligning one’s actions with the divine purpose.

  • Karma: The universal law of cause and effect; the belief that every action, intent, and thought has consequences that affect one's present and future lives.

  • Samsara: The continuous, recurring cycle of birth, death, and reincarnation.

  • Moksha: Liberation or liberation from Samsara, marking the end of the rebirth cycle and union with the divine.

   Buddhism:

  • Nirvana (Nibbana): The ultimate goal; the "blowing out" of the fires of greed, hatred, and ignorance, resulting in liberation from suffering.

  • Samsara: The continuous cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, which is considered unsatisfying (\(dukkha\)).

  • Karma: The law of moral causation; intentional actions of body, speech, and mind create consequences that shape current and future experiences.

  • Meditation: Techniques (like mindfulness and compassion meditation) used to calm the mind and gain insight into the nature of reality.

Yoga within Hinduism is a form of meditation. I don't practice yoga. I just know we need to stretch our bodies.

 Confucianism:

  • Self-Cultivation: The lifelong process of learning and developing virtue.

  • Golden Rule: Often phrased as "Do not do unto others what you would not have them do to you".

  • Focus on Family: The family is considered the foundation of a stable state, where Xiao develops into loyal citizenship.

  • Moral Leadership: Rulers should lead by moral example, not fear.

Taoism:

  • The Tao (道): Often translated as "The Way," it is the underlying, ineffable process of reality, the source of all existence, and the natural flow of the universe.

  • Wu Wei (无为) - Non-Action/Effortless Action: This does not mean doing nothing, but rather acting in alignment with the natural flow of life, avoiding forced or unnatural actions. It is acting without ego or artificial striving.

  • Yin-Yang (阴阳): Represents the harmony of complementary opposites (light/dark, hot/cold, action/inaction). Taoism emphasizes maintaining balance between these forces.

  • Ziran (自然) - Naturalness/Spontaneity: Living authentically and spontaneously, following one’s own inner nature rather than conforming to rigid societal rules or artificial desires.

  • Ch'i (氣) / Qi: The cosmic vital energy or life force that flows through all beings and connects them to the universe.

  • The Taoist Body: The human body is viewed as a miniature of the universe (microcosm)

  • Perpetual Change (\(Bianhua\)): Recognizing that all things exist in a constant cycle of transformation and that holding on too tightly to one state is unnatural.

  • Meditation and Mindfulness: Techniques to calm the mind and perceive the Tao.

  • Respect for Nature: Emphasizing harmony with the natural world rather than attempting to dominate it.

 Animism:

  • Universal Spirit/Soul: The belief that a "soul" or "spirit" (from Latin anima, meaning breath or life) pervades all nature, not just humans.

  • Personhood and Agency: Nature is not merely passive matter but is composed of "other-than-human" beings with their own willpower, intelligence, and personality.

  • Relationality and Interdependence: Humans are part of a community of beings, sharing a tangled web of life that requires respect and stewardship to maintain balance.

  • Animist Perspectives in Life: Modern animism often relates to nature-based spirituality, ecological awareness, and honoring the interconnectedness of all living things.

Ancestral Veneration:

  • Continued Existence & Influence: Ancestors are believed to exist in a spiritual realm where they remain connected to their family, possessing the power to bring blessings, protection, or harm to the living.

  • Honoring Lineage and Legacy: Veneration is a way to acknowledge familial roots, celebrate the wisdom and resilience passed down, and maintain the continuity of the family or community line.

  • Storytelling & Oral Tradition: Sharing stories about ancestors to keep their memory and wisdom alive.

  • Moral and Social Function: Veneration encourages living individuals to maintain high moral standards to ensure they are remembered and honored upon their death.

  • Significance: It serves as a source of strength, identity, and continuity for the family, emphasizing that life persists beyond death.

Animism and Ancestral Veneration both have reciprocity or offerings, but the only aspect of that I do is pour libations (water)

And many East and South Asians believe in Ancestral Veneration as well.

I believe in the energy of the universe and aligning with that energy with one’s own divine spirit. I believe in the power of Mother Earth. I believe we live on after death via ancestors and/or reincarnation (not sold on the idea that those are separate). I believe that more than just humans have those inner divine spirits. Maybe that's where the reincarnation comes in.

There's also the scientific view of the universe. "Energy cannot be created nor destroyed."

So there's actually a lot of mixing. Interconnectedness

This is why my favorite show is Avatar: The Last Airbender and my favorite movies are the Avatar franchise."
